Human Trafficking Prevention
What is Human Trafficking?
Human trafficking is the exploitation of people through force, fraud, or coercion. It can happen anywhere – including airports, bus stops, train stations, rest stops, and hotels across Pennsylvania.
- Sex Trafficking: When someone is forced or coerced into engaging in commercial sex acts
- Labor Trafficking: When someone is forced to work against their will – often through threats, debt, or control of documents
Recognize the Signs
Be alert for travelers who:
- Show signs of abuse, malnourishment, or exhaustion
- Avoid eye contract, appear fearful of authority, or act coached
- Lack control of ID, tickets, or money
- Wear clothing that doesn’t match the situation or season
Report Suspicious Activity
Never approach a suspected trafficker directly. Instead:
- Note details (location, vehicle, physical descriptions of people)
- Contact the Pennsylvania State Police Human Trafficking Tipline
- Via phone: 1-888-292-1919
- Via email: tips@pa.gov
- In an emergency, always call 911 first!
Remember
- If you suspect a trafficking situation, call the tipline immediately. When traffickers keep their victims in transit, time is of the essence.
- No tip is insignificant. Trusting your gut instinct is crucial.
The transportation sector offers a frontline defense against human trafficking when informed transportation personnel and travelers are equipped to recognize and report suspected instances of the crime.
